Freddy's Back

12/11/20

Freddy hasn’t been attending our programs for the last year due to his mom’s work schedule.  However, now that she’s working a different job, she picks him up from school each day.  Last week, as she was driving by, she noticed that our staff and students were outside.

“You should’ve seen me turn around so fast.”

She continued, “After signing Freddy up, I called my mom and told her the good news, ‘I’ve got Freddy back at UrbanPromise’!!”  Ms. Tara told me that now you all go up to 8th grade!!  I was so excited to hear that.”

Then, another mom who has enrolled her daughter before in our programs drove by and spotted us outside, “I didn’t know you all were open for after-school program!  I need you guys!”

She shared that her 6th grader is doing school virtually and is overwhelmed by the work that is piling up.  It’s hard to focus at home, and she’s excited that she can bring her daughter here to get some help and complete her work.

It’s a smaller program this year, ranging from 11-16 students per day, but it feels mighty.  The students seem tighter with one another.  Our StreetLeaders are building closer bonds with the campers.

Maybe we’re all just feeling a little more need for community, faith, and support.

I’ve been thinking about the body of Christ lately.  It’s an amazing mystery that we’re supernaturally connected to Christ as our head, and we operate together as His body on earth.  How can it be?  How can it be that He can use His broken, messed-up people to meet the needs of His creation and manifest His Love on the earth?

That’s His way.  That’s His promise.
